When we first took out our cancer policy, we really hoped we'd never need to use it and only take advantage of the return of premium feature. I never had much family history but quickly discovered that it does not make a difference when dealing with cancer. After a routine dentist visit, my dentist discovered something that didn't look right. After a few days of antibiotics, it appeared that something might be more serious, and I was sent to a specialist. My local physician diagnosed it as cancer but urged me to go to Mayo Clinic in Rochester. It was serious and within a week I had two surgeries and began weeks of daily treatment, Monday through Friday, with radiation therapy. Although we carried what is considered one of the best health insurance providers in Iowa, I quickly discovered all the out-of-pocket non-medical expenses. Our lodging bill in Rochester alone was almost $40,000. that in addition to deductibles, copayments, travel back-and-forth, including follow-up checkups with additional travel and unapproved non-medical bills can really add up. Our cancer policy provided tremendous financial support in our time of need. Instead of focusing on the stress of the expenses, I was able to focus on recovery and healing. The company paid claims quickly and I don't know what we would've done without them. I would highly recommend everyone not to wait and to take advantage of a cancer policy as we just never know what tomorrow brings.
